Janet Schofield

Following A' Levels Jan studied to train as a physical education and geography teacher at Bedford. Her PE teacher recommended the quality of the training. College certainly lived up to, and surpassed, its reputation. She graduated in 1982 and took six months out to travel and to see the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, travelling around Australia, before applying for her first teaching post. Jan gained employment at an Upper School in Bedfordshire and, six years later, whilst holding the post of Head of Department, the travel bug bit again and she backpacked round the World for 18 months. Upon her return, working at another Upper School in the county, Jan held several positions, including Head of Sixth Form (with 600 students), Curriculum Area Leader, Co-ordinator for Initial Teacher Training with a range of schools, and, more recently, working with several schools, Further Education colleges and The University of Bedfordshire on the 14-19 national agenda. This collaborative partnership will be further developed with a third Upper school in the county from September 2007. She has enjoyed continuing to study and has undertaken a range of continuing professional development opportunities. These include training as an Additional Inspector with Ofsted, working with the University of Cambridge and the DfES whilst undertaking her Masters in national research for Curriculum 2000 and gaining the National Professional Qualification for Headship. Jan has been a member of BPEOSA Committee since 1994 when she was Group 5 Representative, then as a co-opted member working with the archive and, since 2004, as Assistant Treasurer, with specific responsibility for the BPEOSA Educational Projects Fund.
